White's introduction discusses this area of problem strategy (Valve: where a move, made by black, opens one line and closes another, both affected lines being black; bi-valves: where the lines affected radiate from two black pieces instead of one). 139 examples follow (51 two-movers, 85 three-movers, 3 four-movers) with full solutions. Includes and index of composers.

Kenneth Samuel Howard (1882-1972) one of the founders of the Marshall Chess Club and chess problem composer. He wrote several books about chess composition: The enjoyment of chess problems (1943), How to solve chess problems (1945), and One hundred years of the American two-move chess problem; a collection of 212 compositions by United States problemists (1962).

Condition:

Letter, problem and envelope laid-in. Corners bumped, spine sunned and lettering dulled, spine ends rubbed. A very good copy and an important association copy.
