Approximately 40 games from 1857 and several in a different hand in 1891 as well as about 8 problems listed and the back. Duodecimo (6 3/4" x 4 3/4") bound in brow cloth with label to spine lettered in gilt. Manuscript.
Thomas Frere (1820-1900) was one of the foremost promoters of chess in the USA in the 19th century. He helped organize the 1st American Chess Congress in New York. He was a player in the minor tournament of that congress. He organized the first Brooklyn chess club. He was one of the organizers of the Manhattan Chess Club. He organized the Fifth American Chess Congress in 1880 and the Sixth American Chess Congress in 1886. He worked as a clerk at the Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York.
Condition:
Spine head lacking with split in title with is dulled, corners bumped and rubbed through to boards. Gutter cracked half way through else a good copy of a unique piece of chess history.
