50 pages with diagram and table. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in half brown cloth over marbled boards. From the library of Lothar Schmid. A short handwritten note by one of the editors of the Deutsche Schachzeitung, Johannes Minckwitz signed. (Linde 5199; van der Linde II, 86) First edition.

The German Chess Championship has been played since 1861, and determines the national champion. Prior to 1880 three different federations organized chess activities in Germany: the Westdeutscher Schachbund (WDSB), the Norddeutscher Schachbund (NDSB) and the Mitteldeutscher Schachbund (MDSB). Each one organized its own championship. In 1880, the nation-wide Deutscher Schachbund was founded, so afterwards only one German championship was played.

The Crefeld (Krefeld) tournament was organized by the Norddeutscher Schachbund and strong contingent of six individuals participated Aldof Anderssen, Louis and Wilfried Paulsen, Johannes Minckwitz, Carl Goring and Karl Pitschel. Anderssen, von Minckwitz, and Louis Paulsen tied for 1st; the order after the playoff was (1) Paulsen, (2) Anderssen, (3) Minckwitz; all finished ahead of Karl Pitschel, Carl Göring, and Wilfried Paulsen.

Handwritten note by one of the editors of the Deutsche Schachzeitung and the tournament book, Johannes Minckwitz on the half title: "The "Augustea" from the estate of Prof. Dr. C. Göring J. Minckwitz."

Lothar Maximilian Lorenz Schmid (10 May 1928 - 18 May 2013) was a German chess grandmaster. He was born in Radebeul near Dresden into a family who were the co-owners of the Karl May Press, which published the German Karl May adventure novels. He was best known as the chief arbiter at several World Chess Championship matches, in particular the 1972 encounter between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky at Reykjavic. He was also an avid collector of chess books and paraphernalia. It was reputed that he owned the largest known private chess library in the world, as well as a renowned collection of chess art, chess boards and chess pieces from around the globe.
