T R Dawson was a British problemist who composed over 6000 problems. He pioneered and specialized in "fairy chess" or non-orthodox problems. These involved helpmates, selfmates, retrograde analysis as well as new kinds of boards and pieces. He invented, for example the grasshopper - it moves like a queen but it must hop over another piece (of either color) and land on the next square beyond. If that square has an enemy piece, the grasshopper can capture it. If that square has a piece of the same color as the grasshopper, then the move is not playable. Such new pieces add enormous variety to ordinary problems. Dawson edited The Problemist (1922-31), the problem section of the British Chess Magazine (1931-1951) and the Fairy Chess Review (1931-43). His major works include Retrograde Analysis (1915), Caissa's Wild Roses (1935) and Caissa's Fairy Tales. [Davinsky: 52-3]
