The short lived American Chess Quarterly was started as a forum for readers' views as well as a workshop for theoretical ideas. It was hoped to be the first chess magazine in the United States dedicated to the interest of the professional chess player. Although occasional issues were geared to the novice. While recognizing that the popularity of chess rested on a broad base, it was hoped that this would not be incompatible with the welfare of the talented few who had given their time to the game. It was started by Larry Evans with some financial assistance from Ken Smith. Contributing editors were, including Evans, Bobby Fisher, Edward Lasker and Joseph Peckover.
