The Fifth German Championship was held in Bad Oeynhausen in July 1938. Sixteen competitors participated in the contest. Erich Gottlieb Eliskases captured clear first with a scored of 12 1/2 of 15 two and half points ahead of the shared second place finishers, Georg Kieninger and Paul (Pablo) Michel. Clear fourth was Ludwig Engels with a score of 9. Albert Becker, Kurt Richter and Berthold Koch shared fifth through seventh a half point behind. Anton Kohler and Ludwig Rellstab shared eighth and ninth with scores of 8. Hans Herrmann with a score of 7 captured clear tenth closely followed by Heinrich Reinhardt a half point behind. Shared twelfth through fourteen was Max Eisinger Jr, Hans Kranki and Ludwig Schmitt with scores of 5 1/2. The last two places were shared by Heinz Nowarra and Wolfgang Weil two points behind. Many of these top tier German players defected the following year in Buenos Aires at the Chess Olympiad while representing Hitler's Germany, including the winner Erich Eliskases, who later became an Argentinian citizen and later represented Argentina.
