Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7") bound in white cloth with black lettering to spine with original wrappers laid on covers. Signed by nine of the top eleven finishers and Oscar Panno on a sheet adhered to front pastedown. The signers are former world Champions Mikhail Tal, Vassily Smyslov and Tigran Petrosian, grandmasters Robert Byren, Efim Geller, Robert Hubner, Bent Larsen, Lajos Portisch and Jan Smekal as well as non participant Oscar Panno. Biel Interzonal 1976 was part of the cycle which ended up with the Karpov - Korchnoi World Championship Match (1978), three players from this event would go to the Candidate matches (1977). Qualified from the zonal tournaments* were: Gennady Sosonko from Barcelona (1975), Raul Sanguineti from Fortaleza (1975), Istvan Csom and Ul Andersson from Pula (1975), Vladimir Mikhailovich Liberzon from Reykjavik (1975), Joaquin Carlos Diaz Diaz and Oscar Humberto Castro Rojas from Santo Domingo (1975), Kenneth Rogoff from the US Championship (1975), Aleksandar Matanovic from Vraca (1975), Bpros Gulko from Vilnius (1975) and Jan Smejkal from Arandjelovac (1976) (= 11 players). Lajos Portisch, Tigran Petrosian and Robert Byrne were qualified from the Candidate matches 1974. FIDE also selected Bent Larsen, Mikhail Tal, Vasily Smyslov, Robert Hubner, and Efim Geller, and added Andre Lombard from the host country to have 20 players. Hans Suri, the father of the Biel Chess Festival was busy because parallel to the main event there were also 1) Internationale Blitzturnier (169 players, won by Oscar Panno), 2) Internationale Open (224 players, won by Dragutin Sahovic), 3) Internationale Open Meisterturnier (96 players, won by Radovan Govedarica), 4) Internationales Open Hauptturnier (139 players, won by Edgar Prang), 5) Internationales Open Allgemeines Turnier (126 players, won by Christian Flueckiger), and finally, 6) Jugendturnier (72 players, won by Murray Chandler). Bent Larsen Captured first with a (+8 -2 =9) followed by a half point and tied for second through fourth was Tigran Petrosian with (+6 -1 =2), Lajos Portisch (+9 -4 =6) and Mikhail Tal (+6 -1 =12). Vasily Smyslov, Robert Byrne and Robert Huebner closed a half point behind them. Ulf Andersson was clear eighth with 10 1/2. Three tied for ninth through eleventh Istvan Csom, Efim Geller and Jan Smejkal.
