The organizers decided to dedicate the tournament to the memory of Professor Daniel Willard Fiske (1831-1904), an American scholar and genuine friend of Iceland. The organizers invited sixteen participants. William Addison and Robert Byrne from the United States and two Russian players Evgeny Vaskjukov and Mark Taimanovwere were invited. A number of players from Iceland Freysteinn thorbergsson, Andres Fjeldsted, Bragi Kristjansson, Benony Benediktsson, Friorik Olafsson, Ingi Johannsson, Johann Sigurjonsson, Guomundur Sigurjonsson and Jon Kristinsson participated. Wolfgang Uhlmann form East Germany, Lazlo Szabo from Hungary and Pedrag Ostojic from Yugoslavia rounded out the field. The time control was two and half hours for 40 moves and the playing time was from 7 to 12 pm except on holidays. The Russian grandmaster Taimanov and Vakjukov started as favorites and then divided the two top prizes by scoring 10.5 - 3.5 in convincing style. Both went through the tournament undefeated. Olafsson came in third. Bryen came in fourth and fifth prize went to Uhlmann. Szabo and Ostojic divided sixth and seventh prize. Addison and G Sigurjonsson shared eight and ninth place. G Sigurjonsson was a twenty year old student and Chess Champion of Iceland. Tenth came Thorbergsson. Next came Johannsson and Kristjansson.
