There were a number of strong Argentinean tournaments in the 50's played at Mar del Plata. The first one in 1950 with others in 1953, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959. In this tournament there were a total of 16 contestants in this tournament representing 8 countries and was played at the Hotel Provincial. Borislav Ivkov, from Yugoslavia, captured clear first with a score of 11.5. Only half point behind was Miguel Najdorf of Argentina. In third was Svetozar Gligorić also representing Yugoslavia. Tied for fourth and fifth were Luděk Pachman of Czechoslovak and László Szabó of Hungary. The next two players were both from Argentina. In clear sixth was Oscar Panno with 9 points and half point behind Hermann Pilnik. The only Spaniard, Roman Toran Albero, captured sole eighth with 8. The rest of the field was from South America. Bernardo Wexler (Argentina), 7.5; Héctor Rossetto (Argentina), 7; Rodrigo Flores Álvarez (Chile), 6; René Letelier (Chile), 5; Lorenzo R. Bauzá (Uruguay), 4.5; Emilio Dodero (Argentina), 4.5; Gregorio Idigoras Guisasola (Argentina), 4.5 and lastly Boris de Greiff Bernal (Columbia) 4.
