Author: Alster, Ladislav (1927-1991) inscribed by Jaroslav Jezek
Year: 1955
Publisher: Státní tělovýchovné nakladatelství
Place: Parah (Prague)
Description:
307+[14 photographs pages]. Octavo (8 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's quarter beige cloth with blue lettering to spine and decorative chess pieces in blue to the cover. From the library of Henry S Dowsett, a gift from the Czech player Jaroslav Jezek (1926-1998) inscribed by him. First edition.
The Zonal tournament for countries in Eastern and Nothern Europe was once again played at Marianske Lazne and Prauge, with the following results: Pachman (Czechoslovakia) 15; Szabo (Hungary) 14 1/2; Sliwas (Poland) 13; Filip (Czechoslavakia) and Stahlberg (Sweden) 12 1/2. Pachman and Szabo were at the head very much as expected; but Sliwa's third place above grandmaster Stahlberg and such players as Filip and Barcza was a surprise. Pachman only lost one game, to Szabo, and he always seem to play especially well in events that take place in his own country. Szabo's two losses were to Balanel and Lundin, while Sliwa lost to Szabo, Stahlberg and Penderson. (BCM: 1954).
Henry Dowsett's collection of over 1000 titles was donated to the University of Texas at Austin in 1959. Dowsett's collection was accumulated over a period of many years and was made possible by the University's chess team.
Jaroslav Ježek was International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster and was awarded the title in 1985.
Condition:
Jezek's inscription on front pastedown. Corners bumped else a very good copy.
