Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including the international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which was its first played in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played. The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. In 1967 the first open tournament was organized. In 1969 it became an annual event. The 1947 contest was won by Miguel Najdorf with +14 with Gideon Stahlberg half point behind. Erich Eliskases Held third with +12. Herman Pilnik was a half point behind him. Julio Bolbochan and former world champion Max Euwe tied for fifth and sixth with +10 1/2.
