Kuibyshev 1942 is one of the least known of chess tournaments. It was played at a difficult time, when chess news circulated slowly, and magazines had limited space available. In addition, the event was held in a city deep in the Soviet Union away from what are in normal times the centers of Soviet Chess. This is the first time these games were published. None had appeared in British, American or German magazines, and very few had been published in the USSR. Even the tournament table was scarce. Partly because of the unusual variations in strength of the contestants, but also because of the intensity of the contest, no fewer than 55 of the 66 games resulted in wins. The tournament was played from July 27th to August 19th, 1942. Isaac Boleslavsky won clear first with +9/11. Followed by future world champion Vasily Smyslov with +8. Third through fifth was a tie with Andor Lilienthal, Vladas Mikėnas and Alexey Sokolsky one half point behind. Lev Yakovlevich took clear sixth with +7. A half point behind him was Vladimir Alatortsev for seventh position. The other players in descending order were Koffman, Ivashin, Mogilevsky, Vulfson and Finogenov.
