Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including the international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which was its first played in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played.The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. In 1967 the first open tournament was organized. In 1969 it became an annual event. Sixteen contestants gathered for the 1961 for the competition. the first place winner was Miguel Najdorf representing his home country of Argentina. Second through fifth, one point behind, were Donald Byrne, Miroslav Filip from Czechoslovakia, Aleksandar Matanovic from Yugoslavia and Hector Rossetto also from Argentina. Sole sixth was Rene Letelier from Chile at +9. The other contestants were Bielicki, dominguez, REinhardt, Pelikan, Perez, Wexler Goldenberg, Camara, Aqinoes and Silva Nazzari.

Condition:

Pencil notations throughout and on front wrapper. Edge wear with some chipping to spine, old bookseller's label to title, stain at head gutter else a good to very good copy.
