The 16th Olympiad was the first ever to be held in Asia; it also attracted a new record number of participants. The chosen representatives of fifty countries entered for the event, among them a team from Australia. For the first time in the history of the Chess Olympiads, players from all five continents were able to take part in a world gathering. In the preliminaries, which took place from November 3rd to 10th, the big surprise was the failure of the East Germans to qualify for the Final. England shared their fate. However, the British Commonwealth was represented in the Championship by the Canadians. The host team also qualified for the top section. The finals lasted from November 10th to 25th. The Soviet Union won the championship handily, though not without being defeated; West Germany caused a sensation by beating them in the fifth round and they secured third place behind Yugoslavia and ahead of Hungary. The United States and Argentina, without Fischer and Najdorf respectively - not to mention a number of other good players - both fell back in the race.
