Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including the international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which was its first played in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played.The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. In 1967 the first open tournament was organized. In 1969 it became an annual event. the 1962 competition was an international even with players form Europe, North America, The Soviet Union and South America, sixteen players in all. Lev Polugaievsky captured an impressive first with +11 1/2 with his countryman, Vassily Smyslov a distant second and third, tied with Laszlo Szabo form Hungary, with a scores of 9 1/2. Fourth through sixth was a tie between Donald Byrne the American, Miguel Najordorf and Raul Sanguineti from Argentina with 8 1/2 points each. Seventh through ninth was Ludek Pachman of Czechoslovakia, Oscar Panno of Argentina and BGruno Parma from Yugoslavia a half point behind. The Argentine Erich Eliskases capture sole tenth with 7. Eleventh and twelfth was a tie with tow Argentinians Herman Pilnik and Hector Rossetto half point behind. Carlos Guimard of Argentina and Jonathan Penrorse from Greath Britian also captured thirteenth and fourteenth with 5 1/2. A full point behind them was the two last place finishers, Carlos Bielicki of Argentina and Reme Letelier from Chile.
