Emanuel Lasker was Chess Champion of the World for 27 years. He won the title in 1894 at the age of 25 in a match against Steinitz, who was then 57 and had been champion since 1866. Lasker also won a return match against Steinitz in 1896, and held the title until beaten in a match in 1921 by Capablanca, then 32. Volume I contains 283 games played in the period 1894/1921; tow, however, do not count for the record, and are not numbered, Marco-Lasker and Chigorin-Lasker, Paris 1900. The rule in that tournament was that a drawn game had to be replayed. There are no notes to the games, as this record is intended to be purely factual. The reader is referred to the books and magazines of the period.
The date of publication is in disagreement with Betts who has it dated 1956. The stated date to the title is November, 1955.
