Frank W. Martindale (1854-1909) was American chess composer. He learned the rules of chess at 17 from reading Agnel's Book on Chess. He composed his first problems at 18 with this book, hoping it would stimulate other to the pure and invigorating mental treat Caissa ever offers her votaries.

James E. Gates collected over 15,000 chess books with a value of over $210,000. He later sold his collection in 1981.
