First published in 1900 under the title Invitation chess tournament: for masters and amateurs, arranged and played at the City of London Chess Club, 7 Grocer's Hall Court, Poultry, EC in April and May 1900, containing the full scores of the games played.
The gathering including the masters J H Blackburne, I Gunsberg, F J Lee, James Mason, R Teichmann and L van Vliet; the amateurs were E O Jones, T F Lawrence, R Loman, S Passmore, T Physick, A E Tietjen and W ward. Tiechmann scored a clear 9 1/2 one half point ahead of Gunsberg and Mason who tied for second through third. Ward captured fourth with an 8 1/2. Van Viet was 5th with 8 1/2, followed by Blackburne with a disappointing 7 1/2. T F Lawrence the only amateur to be in the top seven scored with 6 points.
