The criteria for including a club into this bibliography were: 1) A verifiable club founding in Germany up to 1914 - The term "German" or "Germany" is used geographically; 2) the existence of at lest one commemorative publication (without restriction in regard to the publication date). However, whether the club still exists today was not a criterion, and thus clubs, which had been disbanded a long time ago (as, for instance, the SV Anderssen Frankfurt a.M>) could be taken into account. The basic design of the bibliographical entries is almost self-explanatory and does not require extensive explanation. All chess clubs were included chronologically according to the foundation date of the club, and if a club had several commemorative publications these were also registered chronologically. The first entry always gives the name of the club, followed in the next line by the Federal State and the foundation date if it was known. If the foundation was not mentioned in the commemorative publication additional sources were consulted. The commemorative publication is without a doubt among the most beautiful and highest quality of it kind.
