Part 1 traces the historical development of the chess problem from the Middle Ages, with sections on the English, Bohemian, German and dutch schools, and a chapter on "problem-futurism" (Fairy problems). This first part includes 143 compositions by various composers. Part 2, "Bird's eye view of problem themes', describes 22 main themes (with sub-divisions) and contains a further 231 problems. The complete work forms a comprehensive treatise covering most phases of problem technique and execution.
