This tournament was divided into three classes. A small double-round masters' tournament was the highlight of the Fourth Nordic Chess Congress. the main event saw three foreign masters (Maroczy, Leonhardt and Schlechter) pitted against two Scandinavian opponents (Moller and Krause). Originally planned for six masters, the tournament was reduced to five when S O Svensson of Stockholm withdrew at the last moment. The results were predictable, with the foreign contingent sweeping the top three spots. What was surprising, however, was the triumph of Leonhardt (+3 -0 =5) ahead of the favored GM duo, Schlechter and Maroczy (+2 -1 =5). En-route to his 500 kroner first prize, Leonhardt drew with Maroczy and scored against Schlechter in a pretty two Rook vs Queen ending when the latter unwisely declined a draw by a repetition of moves. Leonhardt's victory foreshadowed his brilliant third-place finish at Carlsbad with began scarcely two days later. Maroczy suffered an unexpected loss to Moller which cost him undisputed second-place prize money. He and Schlechter each received 225 kroner for their tie. In the "first class" tournament, victory went to Sjoberg of Gotebord following a playoff with Engulund of Stockholm. (Caissa Editions Carl Schlechter!)
