This book has enjoyed a wide popularity in America. Its analyses are chiefly derived from Staunton, although some new games and many problems are added. One or two important openings are entirely neglected by the compiler. Scattered through the book are four pleasant Chess sketches, chiefly translated from the Palamede. Each of these stories is illustrated by steel engravings from paintings by Weir. Agnel was for many years Professor of French and Spanish at the United States Military Academy. (Hagedorn).
