Publisher: Printing Craft

Place: London

Description:

[x]+349+[i ad] pages with frontispiece, diagrams and indices. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4") issued in brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Edited by W H Watts. Signed by Emanuel Lasker. Betts:10-130. First revised edition.

First English edition was published in 1927. This is an augmented translation by Lasker of his original (1925) German edition. This edition was published by Dutton in New York in 1934. A comprehensive study of the whole field of practical chess, in six sections: The elements; Theory of the Openings; The Combination; Position play; The aesthetic effect in Chess; Examples and Models. The chapter on the openings comprises an analytical survey, and the following chapter analyzes 22 examples of combination. The section on position play comprises lessons from actual play, and includes an appreciation of Steinitz and his theories. "The aesthetic effect" deals with endgame studies, sacrifices, etc. The final chapter gives 23 master games fully annotated.

Condition:

Gilt dulled, spine ends rubbed, small tear at front heal hinge, corners bumped, signed on front end paper. Very scarce jacket chipped at edges and spine ends, soiled, spine slightly darkened. In examining the book, probably it was signed by Lasker and then another book purchased which had a jacket and married to this signed copy. The book if jacketed during its life time would be in much better condition. About a very good copy in a very good, but extremely scare jacket.
