With 36 competitors and 326 games played, Ostende 1906 was one of the biggest chess tournaments of the time. Only Lasker and Tarrasch opted not to participate, making it also an immensely powerful event. The manager, Isidor Gunsberg, had the difficult task before him to discover a system of playing that would satisfy the chess world and not fatigue the players. The thirty-six players were divided into four groups. In the first round group A played against Group B. There were two more rounds with a system of promotion and relegating and in the last round the top nine played against each other. Their final placings were: 1st Carl Schlechter, 2d Geza Maroczy, 3d A Rubinstein tied for 4th through 6th were A Burn, O S Bernstein and R Teichmann, 7th Frank Marshall, 8th David Janowski and 9th J Perlis. (Gillam: Ostende 1906 published by Caissa editions).
