The Ostende International tournament series started in 1905. In 1907 the last of the really great Ostende tournaments was held. Six players, chosen somewhat arbitrarily, played in a four-round grandmaster tournament. Another tournament, called a Masters tournament, was held among 29 players, many whom either were or became grandmasters. First prize in the grandmaster group went to Tarrasch who not only won a gold medal but also the title of world champion tournament player. Scores: Tarrasch 12 1/2; Schlechter 12; Marshall, Janowski 11 1/2; Burn 8, Chigorin 4 1/2.
