James W Rimmington Wilson (1822-1877) had accumulated one of the best chess libraries in Europe during his day. After his death in 1877 it was not added to, but during the period from his death until it was placed at auction by Sotheby in 1928, the only person having access to it was J R Murray. He used this material for his famous historical work on chess.
In some ways the London 1862 tournament was even more of a landmark than London 1851. It was the first tournament in which players all played each other-a system that was to become known as the American system, possibly owing to its popularity in the USA. It was also important in marking the introduction of a time limit, the fast one of 20 moves in two hours. Draws still did not count. The event is also notable for the personalities it contained. The great Anderssen emphasized his colossal genius by coming first two points ahead of the field, Second was Louis Paulsen, a player whom posterity has continued to underestimate, but who was the inventive genius of the century as far as openings are concerned. There was too the redoubtable newcomer, Wilhelm Steinitz who was to prove the greatest of them all, and finally Blackburne appears for the first time. (Golombek: 185p)
