Theo Brown was born at Hammondsport, New York. At twelve he learned the game from his father. His first problem was published in 1855, and was a 5 mover in Frank Leslie's Illustrated News and since then had become an accomplished composer. In 1859 he the Clipper Prob Tourney winning three of the the five prizes. From 1858-59 he edited the Chess Department of the Missouri Democrat of St Louis. Although he participated in tournament competition, his love was composing and most of his time and effort was directed in that aspect of chess.

Lacks original wrappers, title and back page soiled, corners bumped else a good to very good copy.
