The first published treatise on chess written by an Englishman and based on no previous work, dedicated to Lucy, Countess of Bedford. Although the content of the book is minimal and weak, the work does address the social and advantages associated with the game. Saul's work remains known for its classification of checkmates. Queen Mate; The Bishop's Mate; the Pawnes Mate; and a fooles Mate. Regardless of its content, the book stands apart from other English chess books in that it is the first original chess treatise.
