Description:

Two pages folded letter on The Albany Hotel stationary (7" x 4 1/2") dated December 31, 1934. In French, to his wife signed "Raul," and original transmittal; envelope all in his hand with his full signature on reverse " from J. R. Capablanca with address in London, written while traveling in the United Kingdom as a representative of the Cuban De Legation.

The letter reads: My dear love, Today I received your fist and lovely letter. I hope you will now be calmer. Yesterday, I wrote you in a bad mood because I had not heard from you. I am very happy to see that you love me and that you will try to do the things necessary. On my side, I repeat to you that your are the only woman I have lobed, truly loved, and also that you will be the last. So, try to do as you say in your letter. Now I begin to play a little better. I will write you again in a few days. Meanwhile, I wish you all the best this world has to offer for the new year. My own wish is that we can be together as soon as possible. All my love and tenderness, Raoul I believe hereafter you should write to c/o Legation de Cuba Rue de Lord Byron Paris, France I expect to be there by the 22nd of January. Between the 16th and 22nd. I expect to be in Holland.

With corresponding envelop that has Capablanca's full signature on the reverse.

José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera was a Cuban chess player who was the third world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. A chess prodigy, he is widely renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play. His victory over Frank Marshall in a 1909 match earned him an invitation to the 1911 San Sebastián tournament, which he won ahead of players such as Akiba Rubinstein, Aron Nimzowitsch and Siegbert Tarrasch. Over the next several years, Capablanca had a strong series of tournament results. After several unsuccessful attempts to arrange a match with then world champion Emanuel Lasker, Capablanca finally won the world chess champion title from Lasker in 1921. Capablanca was undefeated from February 10, 1916 to March 21, 1924 a period that included the world championship match with Lasker.

Olga Evgenyevna Choubaroff was born on September 23, 1898, in Tbilisi, the Caucasus region of Russian Empire. She was able to speak Russian, French and English fluently as an adult. She married four times during her life but never had any children. Her second husband was world chess champion Jose Raul Capablanca, whom she married on October 20, 1938, and stayed married until his death in 1942. At their wedding her name was listed as "Princess Cagodalf" from the "Russian house of Chagodalf".
