The first South American Chess Championship (Torneo Sudamericano, Torneio Sulamericano) was held in Montevideo (Carrasco), Uruguay, on December 25, 1921 – January 22, 1922. The Torneio Sulamericano was replaced in 1951 by the Torneio Zonal Sulamericano, except for 1962 when the Torneo Latino-americano was played. The tournament was also the zonal for South America with players from the following countries Argentina - Brasil - Chile - Peru - Uruguay. The event took place in the salon of the Gran Hotel Provincial in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The hotel is one of a pair of twin buildings designed by architect Alejandro Bustillo. Inspired by seafront Hotel du Palais in Biarritz, France. Twenty three individuals participated in the tournament, Erich Eliskases and Julio Bolbochan tied for first with equal scores of 19/13. Clear third was Carlos Maderna with 15. Fourth was Rodrigo Flores Alvarez with a half point behind. Carlos Enrique Guimard was fifth with 14. Tied for sixth and seventh were Bernardo Wexler and Jacobo Bolbochan a point behind with 13. Clear eight was Rene Letelier Martner a half point behind. Ninth and tenth were a tied with Hector Rossetto and Luis Marini with scores of 12. Eleventh and twelfth was shared with Pedro Martin and Alfredo Esposito a full point behind. Thirteenth was solo Heinrich Reinhardt with 10 1/2. Fourteenth through sixteenth was a three way tie at 9 1/2 with Marcos Lucis, Arturo Liebstein and Jose Mangini. Sole seventeenth was Julio Sumar a full point behind. At 8 points and eighteenth was Ruperto Schroeder followed by Lorenzo Bauza a full point behind. Felipe Pinzon Solis and Joao de Souza Mendes a half point behind was followed by Fernando Vasconcellos at 6. Rounding out the field at twenty three was Nelson Dantas at 5 1/2. Eliskases went on to the Interzonal and finished tenth.
