Year: 1936

Publisher: C Seither

Place: Barcelona

Description:

55 pages with diagrams and tables. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's stiff boards. Biblioteca del Ajedrez number 2. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5519) First edition.

Number 16 of the Hastings Christmas Congresses was held from December 28, 1935 to January 6, 1936, and featured fine performances by these players:>Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander, Reuben Fine, Salomon Flohr, Harry Golombek, Georges Koltanowski, Reginald Pryce Michell, Savielly Tartakower, George Alan Thomas, Theodore Tylor, William Winter. One player in particular, of course, Reuben Fine sprinted to the fore and was never headed thereafter, thanks to a miscalculation by Flohr during a complicated sacrificial attack in their first round game. (Was it just a coincidence that Fine had recently collaborated on a collection of Lasker's games?). Second was Flohr one point behind with +6 1/2 with Tartakower on his heals half point behind and Koltanowski close behind (+5 1/2). Tailing off were Alexander (+4) and Golombek and Thomas tied with +3 1/2. Rounding out the field were Tylor and Mitchell (+3) and Winter (+2 1/2).

Condition:
