The first three Mar del Plata international tournaments (1928, 1934, 1936) were regarded as the third, fourth, and sixth South American Chess Championship (Torneo Sudamericano), respectively. The first Torneio Sulamericano took place in Montevideo (Carrasco), Uruguay, in 1921/22. Fourteen contestants contributed to the tournament ten from Argentina, one from Paraguay and three from Uruguay.

Aaron Schwartzman became the champion of South America at Mar del Plata 1934 with a score of 10.5 points followed by Roberto Grau a half point behind. A four way tie was for third place with Carlos Guimard, Virgilio Fenoglio, Julio Cesar Balparda and Jacobo Bolbochán sharing the spot-light at 8.5. In seventh and eight were Luis Piazzini and Guillermo Holtey a point and half back.
