There have previously been two books on this tournament both now unobtainable on the secondhand market. They was Morgan's Shilling Library and it contained only a selection of games without notes. This volume is a compilation of all the games from the chess magazines and biographies of the time.
This was the sixth tournament of the British Chess Association, one of several organizations in British chess. The tournament attracted twenty of most of the top players in the world. The only major name missing was Emanuel Lasker and Wilhelm Steinitz. The playing schedule of 3 games every 2 days, excluding Sundays, plus the adjourned sessions, was the same as in the biennial German congresses, but it proved to be too arduous for many of the competitors. Siegbert Tarrasch handily won first with 15.5 out of 19. A distant second was Joseph Blackburne with 12.5. Close behind within a half point was George Mackenzie and Henry Bird tied for third and fourth. Isidor Gunsberg and James Mason shared fifth and sixth with 11.5. Seventh through ninth was a three way tie a half point behind with Theodor von Scheve, Samuel Tinsley and Semyon Alapin. In the middle of the pack and sole tenth was Jean Taubenhaus with 10.5. Eleventh was Emil Schallopp at 10. The remaining contestants ended close to their strengths Francis Lee and William Gunston 9; James Mortimer 8.5; John Owen 7.5; Oscar Müller 7; Edmund Thorold 6; Charles Locock 5.5; Louis van Vliet 5; and George Gossip at 4.
