In one respect it is the most nearly mathematical form of the chess moves, for its essence is always the pure demonstration of a possibility. All idea of combat is eliminated and combat has nothing whatever to do with mathematics. Imagine a demonstration in Euclid in which every second step of the reasoning was in endeavor to thwart the step preceding! From another angle it may be argued that the Helpmate is a logical form of problem. For any chess problem is assumed to be a position which might have arisen in actual play, no matter how absurd the antecedent sequence of moves. In other words, the initial position of any orthodox chess problem may be considered as having been developed during a game conducted by Help-play.

Condition:

Spine sunned, some marginalia, previous owner's name on front end paper and date '1935', corners bumped else about a very good copy.

Author: White, Alain Campbell (1880-1951)

Year: 1910

Publisher: The Chess Amateur

Place: Stroud

Description:

210 pages with frontispiece and numerous black and white illustrations. He pioneered and specialized in "fairy chess" or non-orthodox problems. These involved helpmates, selfmates, retrograde analysis as well as new kinds of boards and pieces. He invented, for example the grasshopper - it moves like a queen but it must hop over another piece (of either color) and land on the next square beyond. If that square has an enemy piece, the grasshopper can capture it. If that square has a piece of the same color as the grasshopper, then the move is not playable. Such new pieces add enormous variety to ordinary problems. Portlick Castle had been purchased in 1703 by the Rev. Robert Smyth for £885. This Robert had a son Ralph who died apparently without an heir. However, and illegitimate son, Robert, was produced by a local woman and authenticated by a local clergyman, and he duly inherited the castle. In 1882 Frideswide Fanny Beechey was the first women to win a prize in a chess-problem composing competition. The British Chess Magazine of 1883, on page 30, noted that a “Chess Department” had commenced, edited by Miss Beechey, in a new weekly publication, the Matlock Register, the first edition of which was dated 08/12/1882. The title, by chance or design, is reminiscent of the name of the ship, Blossom, in which her father and uncle sailed together to the Pacific and the Bering Straits. On the formation of the British Chess Problem Society in 1918 he was elected President, and held that post until his death. The same depth of imagination, the same keen perception of beauty, the same fertility of invention, we ask the poet, can be found in another form in the humble labors of problem composers. He was a strong amateur chess player and records of some of his games survive, including a victory over Wilhelm Steinitz, the first official world champion of chess. Rimington-Wilson developed an extensive gaming library, which was maintained and perhaps added to by his son, Reginald Henry Rimington-Wilson (1852-1927). After the death of R. H., his son Captain H. E. Rimington-Wilson (1899-1971) ordered the sale of the library by auction at Sotheby's. It was the Quaritch firm that purchased the vast majority of the Rimington-Wilson lots at Sotheby's.

Condition:

Corners bumped and lightly rubbed. His interest in chess continued through the war and later became the president of the Australian Chess Problem Club. His first published problem appeared in the Melbourne Leader in 1945. From 1945 through 1947 his problems only appeared in that news paper. He had his first problem in the Weekly Times in 1952. It has the quality of being a continuous constructive effort by composers of many generations, over a period of nearly one and half centuries, to build an edifice of sound economical record positions in various categories of Tasks. Only Maximum Tasks are dealt with in this booklet, but Minimums and other do exist. Many of the famous Problemists such as W A Shinkman, H F L Meyer, T R Dawson, N Petrovic and Karl Fabel have played their part in this cooperative effort; while some composers, such as A Karlstrom, E Fielder, T Marlow and the authors of this booklet, have specialized in the Construction Task.

Condition:

Lightly soiled, edge wear, points bumped else a very good copy.

SOLD 2024

Author: Eric Manfred Hassberg (1918-1987) inscribed by the author

Year: 1948

Publisher: Littlethorup Press

Place: Omaha

Description:

67 pages with diagrams and index.
