308 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4) bound in black cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. Preface by Alain White. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 2890) First edition.

From White's Preface: This collection of problems is the largest ever published; representing the creation of a single composer and most surprising is that it consists almost exclusively of problems in two movers (only 42 problems in three movers and two in four). Such a collection would have been impossible thirty or forty years ago, but Ellerman has been one of the specialists, whose works, along with those of Guidelli, Mansfield, Gamage, Mari, Barulin and others, have managed to revive the problem of two plays in last quarter century. And of all the great composers of problems in two movers, Ellerman has been the most prolific and the one that has obtained more successes in problem competition. The number of his compositions rises to the surprising figure of more than three thousand and fifty and at the moment his first prizes add up to 66, according to last computation. His works were main factors for the development of style of composition of The Good Companion Club, that dates from the year 1916 and his muse inspired with equal success in modern Russian ideas with variations of subjects of Barulin I and II, in the numbers 996 and 974 of this collection. And needless to say, that his constructive ability is almost miraculous. This book by the panorama it encompasses, will be treasured by all scholars of the problem in two movers, while that type of problems will maintain its popularity.
