The 1971 FIDE congress, meeting in Vancouver, decreed that the 1973 Interzonal stage of the 1972-5 World Championship cycle would be contested in the form of two, as nearly equal as possible, 16 players tournaments, instead of a single tournament as in 1948, 1955, 1958, 1962, 1964, 1967 and 1970. This allowed the Fide to allocate places to: a) all the 1971 Candidates (Geller, Hubner, Korchnoi, Larsen, Taimanov and Uhlmann - Petrosian, as losing finalist was seeded to the 1974 Candidates stage, while Fischer had become World Champion) plus b) eight players of strenght to be selected before 31 December 1971 by a commission consisting of M Botvinni, I Kashadan, M Najdorf, and P Trifunovic. The invited players were Polugayevsky, Portish, Smyslov, Tal, Keres, Hort and Stein; reserves in order were Panno, Bronstein. c) 17 qualifiers from zonal tournaments: Europe 1, 2 and 3 (2 places each), USSR (3 places), USA (2 places), Canada (1 place), Central American (1 place), South American (2 places), West Asian (1 place), East Asian (1 place). This tournament is Europe 2 and sixteen players qualified. Ivan Radulov from Bulgaria with a score of 11. Florin Gheorghiu from Romania capture second and qualified for the Interzonal with 10.5. Close on his heals was Hans-Joachim Hecht from West Germany a half point behind missed the cut. Tied for fourth and fifth place were Alexander Matanovic form Yugoslavia and Zoltan Ribli from Hungary had scored 9. In descending order were Wlodziemierz Schmid at 8.5; Leif Ogaard with 8; Jan-Hein Timman scoring 7.5; and a three way tie with Ikka Saren, Milan Matulovic and Ulf Andersson at 7; A two way tie with Arthur Hennings and Ole Jakobsen with 6.5. Heikki Westerinen with 5.5; Karl Robatsch 4.5 and Jonas Thorvaldsson 2.5.
James E. Gates collected over 15,000 chess books with a value of over $210,000. He later sold his collection in 1981.
