Much of the finest chess played toward the end of the classical period (from 1907 through 1913) occurred in the great matches of the day. Many of these matches are now almost legendary, like Lasker v Schlechter, Lasker v Tarrasch, and Capablanca v Marshall. Yet while an occasional game from these great matches appears in collections, most of them are not available to the serious chess-player. For this volume Fred Wilson has selected the finest classical matches from the annual London publication, The Year-Book of Chess, where they were originally reported in full. He includes thirteen complete matches and the best games from another six matches, making a total of 157 games. Four complete title defenses by Lasker: Laser v Marshall, Lasker v Janowksy, Lasker v Tarrasch, and the famous Lasker v Schlechter, where Lasker was fortunate to retain his title on a tide score. Another prize is the complete Capablanca v Marshall. Also included are two non-title matches between Lasker and Janowksy, Mieses v Schlechter blindfold match, matches between Mieses and Marshall, Rubinstein, Spielmann and Teichmann, and Marshall v Leonhardt. For the remaining six matches, the best games are given: Janowksy v Marshall, Schlechter v Tarrasch, Marshall v Janowksy, Spielmann v Tartakower, Marshall v Duras and Spielmann v Teichmann. Careful, full annotations are supplied for all games, while the original introductions to the matches offer scores of interesting contemporary comment on the matches and their players.
